I love performing live with my full band and always particularly miss harmonies when I perform solo so recently I decided to research live vocal harmonisers. TC-Helicon’s products were the first thing that caught my attention. The VoiceLive 3 really appealed to me as it also had a the ability to loop guitar which is the main instrument I accompany myself on. When the VoiceLive 3 arrived it seemed a little daunting to me as I had never used a looper or harmoniser before, but after spending a little time with it its possibilities seemed endless.
In the past, I had always been wary of harmonisers, concerned that they might sound robotic or false, but once again the VoiceLive 3 surprised me. Its ability to choose the key, interval, gender, percentage of humanisation and numerous other settings, allows you to create harmonies as real or as false sounding as you like. The looper is a whole new dimension that I had never really considered before for my solo act. Not only can it loop numerous guitar and vocal parts (with or without harmonies) there’s also the ability to pre record sections of songs as well as overdub so you can decide how much you want to loop live or record beforehand. On top of all this there is the guitar sounds; as an acoustic player this is something new for me but the more I play around with them the more I want to use live!
I just got back from a 3 week support tour of North America and really feel the VoiceLive 3 enhanced my set and gave my solo performance a much fuller and richer sound that I didn’t think I’d be able to achieve on my own. At this stage I feel I’m only scratching the surface of what this machine can do and can’t wait to use it more in my upcoming tour of Germany as well as maybe incorporating it into the full band set.
